People and owner freedom

Why agency owners become the bottleneck

The habits that help you launch an agency can hold it back as it grows.

At the start, you do everything

Valuations, viewings, phones, marketing and problems. In my first office, I was doing the cleaning too. Being involved in everything is often part of starting a business. The difficulty comes when that stays the model after the team grows.

Being needed is not the same as being effective

If every decision comes back to you, the business can only move as quickly as you can respond. Your team waits, your diary fills and the work of improving the agency gets pushed aside by another urgent question.

Give people a clear picture of good

Delegation needs more than handing over a task. Agree the outcome, the standard expected and the decisions someone can make without you. Set a review point so support does not become constant intervention.

Examine what keeps returning to your desk

For a week, record the questions and problems brought to you. Which genuinely need an owner’s decision? Which need a clearer process, better training or someone taking responsibility? Repeated questions often reveal missing structure.

A practical action this week

Choose one recurring decision. Agree who owns it, the limits of their authority and when they should escalate. Review how it went together. Start small enough to learn, then build on what works.
